The American flag leads the procession of flags of the nations. Note also the sugar cane arches in the main aisle. It was brought to the Caribbean area when the Church of England established itself. ... For the Pilgrims, this idea was rooted in the Anglican Church, since they were from England. ... We brought this idea here to the Church of Our Savior.” During Fr. Fox's sermon, “Today is the day to thank the Lord” recurred. He first noted that Tuesday will be Veteran's Day, so he asked all veterans to stand and be honored. He then noted election day, not only for President but also for other federal, state and local offices. Again a reason to thank the Lord. The fruits and vegetables we see in the church today are a reminder that God provides for our needs. “Today is the day to thank the Lord.” It is also a reminder of the Promised Land, a land flowing with milk and honey. The pineapple before us today on the table is a reminder of the sweetness of the Lord. Heaven will last forever, because God's gifts are so immense. Harvest Sunday is an opportunity to thank the Lord for his gifts to us. The harvest reminds us of the missionary aspect of the church. Jesus used that analogy, the field is ripe for the harvest, so pray that there will be workers to bring others to God. National Flags were brought into the church in procession. This is truly a multi-cultural church with twenty-four nations represented in the congregation. In addition to the United States, members come from Germany, Italy, Poland, Great Britain and many of the Caribbean and Latin American nations. Harvest Festival proceeds from the sale of the harvest fruits, vegetables, plants and baked goods will be donated to Fr. Kendall of Saint Thomas Church, Grand Turk Island, to assist families whose homes were damaged or destroyed in Hurricane Ike. As a bonus for the day, a member of the congregation celebrated her ninetieth birthday last week. The church joined with her in the hall to share cake and ice cream, and to give thanks. |
